Spooky Couture Golf Collection
Maggie Hardy Magerko, owner of 84 Lumber and Nemacolin Woodlands Resort is focused on fun and wants to eliminate the stodginess of traditional golf. Her filmmaker son PJ asked his Brooklyn designer friends, Jackson and Alexander to help his bubbly mom look and feel good for press conferences. They began with embellishing t-shirts and jean jackets for a classy yet casual style and “it kind of grew from there.” She commissioned them to create a Spooky Couture Golf Collection for the opening of Shepherd’s Rock golf course at Nemacolin. Maggie thanked them for their creativity at the ribbon cutting ceremony, which began with a bagpipe parade from Horizon Point to the scenic 9th green of Shepherd’s Rock where Val the sheep filled the role of logo mascot donned in tartan. As the couturiers posed for a pic with Val, Jackson quipped, “I wish I had designed her outfit.”
The Spooky Couture pair never really intended to make golf apparel, just fashion. Now they have 6 different kinds of embroidered hats with beads and crystals adorning the ram logo. Maggie is thrilled and repeatedly marvels, “Aren’t they so creative?” Their goal is a crossover fashion for men and women. Guys loved the look of Maggie’s sister Taylor’s “Hole in One” sequined t-shirt with a ram on the flag of a hole pin and everyone mused over the embroidery on the back of PJ’s polo. Kathy Drake’s ram pants? They are just too fun. Jackson and Alexander’s tongue in cheek creations are exclusive to Nemacolin and sentimental. Their letter jacket number is emblazoned with 87 – the year Joseph Hardy (Maggie’s dad) bought the property to build a “something for everyone” destination.
Embroidered in Italy and constructed in New York, Spooky Couture’s Retail Collection for Shepherd’s Rock includes tote bags with a golf crest and pink ram’s head version. The women’s fitted white polo has a breast pocket with a hand-embroidered ram in Swarovski crystals, seed bead, French knots, and tufted eyelash embroidery. Buttons are white mother of pearl.
A soft pink lounge hoodie with a large silver ram on the back pairs with low-rise sweatpants in “Mellow Rose” pink. Silver accents the pocket snaps and lace ends, with a long silver “Shepherd’s Rock” text embroidery down the side made with metallic foil and studded with Swarovski crystals. Fox fur further accents several pieces – hoodies, caps and jackets – all are stunning.
Why Spooky? “Because of our fascination with all things magical and bright – and spooky is really a nod to the sense of humor and fun but also something slightly off-kilter….” That perfectly fits Maggie.
