Ouray Sportswear Goes Casual
Pajamas on the airplane and leggings on the course are evidence of a dressing down trend, casual counter couture if you will.
A young freelance writer recently spent the last day of a press trip (including lunch at a fine winery and boarding the plane home) wearing a skimpy workout top and stretch pants emblazoned with, “Nasty Gal” across the waist band.
Hmm, you might take a long pause to ponder this and the debate on the LPGA’s updated dress code policy. Plunging necklines, bun exposures are not allowed, nor are joggers or leggings unless under shorts.
Almost every golf apparel company is offering a stretchy legging or sweat pant for women and men. Tee shirts are displayed in pro shops with club logos and golf graphics.
Ouray Sportswear exemplifies this casual culture change, carrying their sweatshirt styling over to the golf industry with ease. It all began with Bill Musselman out of his Colorado garage in 1965 making ski accessories, adding gloves, headwear and the very necessary ski slope bota bags in the ’70’s.
The 80’s brought more headgear evolving to full apparel in the 90’s and the present company name, Ouray after an Ute Indian Chief. Their website says, “Hard to say, easy to wear.”
Soft, comfortable, fitted tees and more in performance fabrics are graphically enhanced with logos for green grass shops and merchandise areas for major pro events. While more and more golf courses might allow the tees, their outer garments are game anywhere for the casual golfers who will say, “Hooray for Ouray.” Comfort is key to the casual couture trend.
