Devereux designer and co-founder Robert Brunner hit the golf fashion market with his brother Will Brunner in 2013. The brother team made instant waves with the new look, sparking much attention and curiosity. What gives such a seemingly modest style that extra appeal that makes a man feel better dressed than the rest? According to Robert, the key is in the threading.
Speaking with Robert Brunner about fashion conjures up images of Hogan, Palmer, and Player, whom they site directly as iconic leaders of golf style on their dvrxgolf.com website. The design principles by which the brother team abide alludes to an era in which men still took the time to iron shirts and pleat pants. The Brunner brothers have made it their mission to offer a golf brand that is similarly tailored to enhance the look of the contemporary man.
Alicia Moon: What do you believe best defines contemporary golf fashion?
Robert Brunner: Proper fitting of clothes. You’re seeing a way more tailored look on the course these days. The aesthetics can be somewhat subjective, but the tailoring and detail is what makes a difference in contemporary fashion. Golfers are in better shape these days. We’re seeing more of a surgence of men who work out and want to wear apparel that makes them look good on the golf course.
AM: Would you say Devereux goes for more of a contemporary look or a timeless look?
RM: Its kind of a hybrid. Devereux has something of a classic look with a modern flare. We appeal primarily to men in their 20s-40s, so we try to stay on trend with that. Our designs attract men looking for a new look and a new style. Men looking for more fitted styles.
AM: What creative innovations are you most proud of with the inception of Devereux golf apparel?
RB: We’re innovative in the way we bring fashion into golf. We look at what the guys at the top of the fashion industry are doing, e.g. Gucci, Ralph Lauren, etc, even with runway fashion, and we try to bring some of those elements into what we’re offering to golf.
AM: Where did the inspiration to create Devereux come from?
RB: The birth of the company came from being out and playing golf and not having apparel that transcends from the golf course to a night out. I wanted to create apparel that offered that.
AM: Do you have a favorite quotation that you feel represents Devereux?
RB: Yes. “Together we’ll change the world, one stitch at a time.” It’s a quote by Glenn O’Brien, GQ’s contemporary fashion guru.
AM: Does Devereux have a personal mission statement?
RB: We want people to see us as a company that puts forth quality and integrity in what we do. As for me, I am invested in creatively providing apparel that makes a man feel confident in his appearance.
It’s hardly surprising, with such sentiments at heart, that the source of the name Devereux also speaks volumes. The Brunner brothers’ desire to integrate antiquated principles of fashion into what they are bringing to contemporary golf style is written all over it. “We named Devereux after my grandmother. She has always been an inspiration to myself and my family, especially when it comes to fashion. She is now 91yrs old and still dresses up in makeup and heels to this day. Devereux is her first name, and we wanted to honor her for inspiring us,” Robert proudly explained.
Devereux lifestyle golf apparel can be found online at dvrxgolf.com. The new Christina O Collection offers hues of white washed sand, sea, and appricot trees, just in time for that Spring and Summer golf vacation at home or abroad.
